The Enlightenment did not begin in Europe. Instead, argues David Graeber, author of The Dawn of Everything, its origins lie in late 17th century Madagascar, when it was home to several thousand pirates. It was a brief window of radical democracy, as the pirates attempted to apply the egalitarian principles of their ships to a new society on land.
